Two RIU Palace Resorts Near Cancun Just Shut Down for Months — and One Is Coming Back Very Different
RIU Palace Peninsula in Cancun closed April 6 for a multi-month renovation, while RIU Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen will follow in May and reopen as an adults-only resort.
RIU Hotels & Resorts has temporarily closed two of its Palace-branded properties on Mexico's Caribbean coast for major renovations, pulling more than 1,000 rooms offline through the summer.
RIU Palace Peninsula in Cancun's Hotel Zone shut its doors on April 6. The 562-room all-inclusive, one of the most recognizable properties along Boulevard Kukulcan, is expected to reopen on July 25 after what RIU describes as a full-scale renovation.
The bigger story is happening down the coast. RIU Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen will close on May 4 for its own renovation and isn't expected to reopen until September 5 — and when it does, it won't be the same resort. The beachfront property, which has operated as a family-friendly all-inclusive within the gated Playacar community for years, will relaunch as an adults-only concept.
That shift aligns RIU Palace Mexico more closely with the brand's couples-focused properties like RIU Palace Las Americas, another adults-only resort in Cancun's Hotel Zone. It also reflects a broader industry trend: several major all-inclusive chains have been converting family properties to adults-only in the Riviera Maya and Cancun corridor, responding to strong demand from couples and honeymooners willing to pay premium rates for quieter, more curated experiences.
RIU has been investing heavily in its Mexican portfolio. The brand opened Hotel RIU Ventura in Cancun earlier this year with 705 rooms and a rooftop sky bar, and recently debuted RIU Palace Phuket as its first property in Southeast Asia. These renovations signal that the chain is upgrading its existing footprint at the same pace it's expanding into new markets.
Guests with existing reservations at either property are being offered rebookings at other RIU resorts in the region.
