Riu Palace Mexico sits inside the Playacar gated community, which gives it a quieter residential feel compared to the Hotel Zone properties in Cancun. The trade-off is distance: you're inside a private development rather than steps from Playa del Carmen's 5th Avenue, and the town's restaurants and nightlife require a short transfer. For guests who want the contained, secure all-inclusive experience, this is a feature. For guests who want to wander freely into town, it's a friction point.
The 'Stay at 1, Play at 5/6' privilege is the resort's operational differentiator. Access to five or six neighboring Riu properties in Playacar means your dining and entertainment options expand dramatically beyond what 434 rooms can support alone — without paying for additional stays. The La Piñata nightclub at Riu Tequila, for instance, is free entry with drinks included. This matters most for stays over five nights, when the Palace's own six restaurant rotation can start to feel repetitive.
The honest problem is timing. A scheduled renovation from May 4 to September 5, 2026 will close the resort entirely, after which it reopens as an adults-only property. Anyone currently booking a family vacation here for late 2026 and beyond should note this shift. Families traveling before May 2026 get the current family-friendly format with RiuLand kids' club (ages 4–12), children's pool, and multi-generational amenities. Families traveling after September 2026 should book elsewhere.
Practically: 434 junior suites and suites — no standard double rooms, all suite-format. Five pools (two large freshwater, one Jacuzzi, one children's). Direct beach access on Playacar's white-sand stretch, calm Caribbean water. Six restaurants plus bars. 50 km from CUN airport (45 minutes). AAA Four Diamond rating current.
