Overview

Riu Palace Peninsula has a detail most Cancun all-inclusives can't claim: genuine Mayan archaeological ruins on the property grounds. They're not a major site — smaller than Tulum or Chichén Itzá — but the presence of actual pre-Columbian stonework on a resort property is architecturally unusual and creates a distinctive visual backdrop, particularly around the pool area. It's a reasonable conversation point for guests who otherwise find Cancun Hotel Zone properties interchangeable.

The resort's scale creates meaningful internal differentiation. At 562 rooms, it's large enough to support seven distinct pool areas — four general swimming pools, an infant pool, a scuba diving pool for introductory lessons, and an Adults Only Villa private pool. The Adults Only Deluxe Villas section operates almost as a resort within a resort: private pool, access to the exclusive Kulinarium restaurant (lobster, filet mignon), and dedicated services unavailable to standard guests. Guests in standard rooms cannot access the villa pool or Kulinarium.

The Thursday lobster night in the main buffet Las Olas is a widely mentioned highlight. Complimentary lobster tails appear on the Thursday seafood buffet — this changes the value calculation for guests who plan around it. Confirm the current schedule at check-in, as it may have changed from historical patterns.

The drawback is the age of the physical plant. Opened in May 2012, the resort has not undergone a documented comprehensive renovation as of available information. Twelve-plus years without a rebuild at 562 rooms means some areas show wear — lower-category room finishes can feel dated. The Cancun Hotel Zone location means airport transfers from CUN are 21 km (25–35 minutes) — manageable but not as quick as some competitors.

Pros

  • +Genuine Mayan ruins on the property grounds — a visual and historical detail that separates this property from every other Cancun Hotel Zone all-inclusive
  • +Thursday lobster tail night in the main buffet is a meaningful value event — plan a dinner around it
  • +Seven pools including a dedicated scuba diving pool for lessons — the pool variety is unusually high
  • +No reservation required at specialty restaurants — dining flexibility without daily pre-planning

Cons

  • −Opened 2012 with no documented comprehensive renovation — lower-category rooms may show wear compared to recently rebuilt properties
  • −Adults Only Deluxe Villa Kulinarium restaurant is inaccessible to standard room guests — the premium dining tier is completely siloed
  • −At 562 rooms, peak-season pool and restaurant crowding is real — the no-reservation policy means early arrival is necessary at busy restaurants
  • −Weekly beach party events can make the atmosphere louder than expected for guests seeking calm

Tips

  • Confirm the Thursday lobster buffet is still running at check-in — it has been a recurring feature but schedules change by season
  • If Kulinarium access matters to you, book Adults Only Deluxe Villa category at booking — you cannot upgrade to this access at the property
  • Isla Mujeres poolside transforms to steakhouse at 6:30pm — the transition is fast; arrive before 6:15 if you want the first dinner sitting outside
  • The Mayan ruins are most atmospheric at dusk — the lighting changes the viewing quality significantly
