How we picked the best beach all-inclusive resorts

The phrase "beachfront resort" is doing more work than it should. Plenty of properties are technically on the beach but require a long boardwalk to reach passable sand, or front a stretch where seaweed (sargassum) blankets the shore from May through August, or sit on a coast where the surf is too aggressive to actually swim in. The resorts on this list pass a stricter test: the beach itself is the reason to come, the sand is fine and white rather than coarse-tan, the water is calm enough to swim in without grabbing a child, and the property maintains the shoreline aggressively enough that sargassum doesn't ruin a vacation.

A few specific beaches make repeat appearances here for good reason. Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos has been on every "best beach in the world" list since the lists started — the water is impossibly turquoise, the bottom is soft sand all the way out, and the offshore reef breaks the surf before it reaches the resort lines. Maroma Beach, fronted by both Secrets Maroma and El Dorado Maroma, has appeared on the Travel Channel's world-best list four years running. Seven Mile Beach in Negril, Eagle Beach in Aruba, Dover Beach in Barbados — these are the Caribbean's elite shorelines, and the properties below own the best stretches of each.

One honest caveat: even on these beaches, sargassum still shows up. The stronger the resort's beach maintenance team, the less you'll notice — but no resort on Earth controls ocean currents. If you're booking April through August in the Mexican Caribbean, follow a sargassum tracker for two weeks before your flight and switch to the Pacific or to Aruba (which is largely seaweed-free) if the forecast is bad. The properties below all have decent maintenance crews, but the smartest move is always to check current conditions rather than trust last year's photos.
