The location alone separates Riu Palace Las Americas from most of its Cancun competitors: it sits at the Punta Cancun end of the Hotel Zone on Playa Caracol, a stretch of beach with notably calmer water than the exposed beaches further south. If you've stayed at Cancun properties where red flags made the beach unusable, the difference here is meaningful. The resort also has the most architecturally distinctive interior of any Riu property in the area — painted ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and a palatial lobby that genuinely looks different from the modern-minimal boxes that dominate the zone.
The resort operates adults-only (18+) and runs a 24-hour all-inclusive program. It's well-suited for couples after a social atmosphere and for friends traveling together. The adults-only policy means no kids' programming, which creates a measurably quieter daytime tone than family-oriented properties. Six specialty restaurants for dinner — Italian, Mexican, steakhouse, Japanese, and fusion — plus the main buffet Don Roberto and poolside El Romero for lunch. The variety is better than most of the zone's adults-only competition.
The honest drawback: room quality is uneven. This property hasn't undergone a full renovation since 2015–2016, and some guests report musty odors, outdated electrical outlets with no USB charging, and televisions that feel dated. Room allocation can also miss the mark — guests who book sea views sometimes end up in courtyard-facing rooms, which requires a conversation with reception at check-in. The included wine and champagne quality is also below what you'd expect given the pricing.
At 372 rooms, the property is mid-sized. It sits 22 km from Cancun International Airport, roughly a 25–35-minute drive. Sister property access gives you facilities at Riu Caribe, Riu Cancun, and Riu Palace Peninsula — a genuine expansion of options for dining and pool use. The Lounge 24 self-serve bar and snack area runs 24 hours, which is genuinely useful for late-night returns.
