How to pick the right all-inclusive destination

Most all-inclusive regrets we hear about don't come from picking a bad resort — they come from picking the wrong destination for the trip the traveler actually wanted. Cancun and the Riviera Maya dominate the all-inclusive market for North Americans because they're the closest, cheapest, and best-connected, but they're not the right answer for every type of trip. The Caribbean's smaller islands — St. Lucia, Turks and Caicos, Antigua — offer quieter beaches and a less crowded resort experience at a higher price point. Los Cabos and the Pacific side of Mexico avoid the seasonal sargassum problem the Riviera Maya faces from April through August. The Maldives is its own category entirely, with private-island properties priced at a multiple of any Caribbean equivalent.

Three structural questions matter more than any amenity comparison. First, the flight: how far is it from your home airport, and is there a direct route? A 4-hour direct flight to Punta Cana produces a fundamentally different week than a 12-hour multi-leg journey to Bali. Second, hurricane risk: June through November in the Caribbean and Atlantic Mexico, with peak risk in September. The Pacific coast of Mexico, Aruba, and the Dutch ABC islands are largely outside the hurricane belt. Third, the destination's all-inclusive infrastructure: some destinations (Dominican Republic, Cancun, Jamaica) have hundreds of properties to choose from at every price point; others (Bermuda, Hawaii) have very few genuine all-inclusives.

We've organized this directory into three tiers based on the depth of the all-inclusive market in each destination. Tier 1 destinations have dozens of properties across multiple brands and price tiers, making them safe defaults for first-time travelers. Tier 2 destinations have strong but narrower selections. Tier 3 destinations are emerging markets where the all-inclusive concept is gaining traction but the property count is still small — great for travelers who want something unusual.
