Exceptional Personalized Service
Staff remembers names after a single meeting and delivers warm, attentive service without being intrusive. Frequently described as the resort's greatest asset.
Outstanding Farm-to-Table Dining
Encanto Farm & Sea sources 90%+ ingredients from local Baja farms. Multi-course tasting dinners with regional wine pairings rival fine dining at much larger resorts.
Intimate Boutique Atmosphere
Only 48 rooms means it never feels crowded. Quiet by 9 PM. The pool is always available and the beach never has a chair shortage.
Stunning Architecture & Ambiance
Santorini-inspired whitewashed walls, bougainvillea, Talavera tile, and cobblestone paths. Romantic and photogenic at every turn.
Beachfront Setting & Whale Watching
Gorgeous Sea of Cortez views from every vantage point. Humpback and gray whales visible from terraces December through April without leaving the property.
Extensive Stairs Throughout
Cascading hillside design means navigating up to 98 steps from some rooms to the restaurant and beach. Golf cart available but not always convenient. Not suitable for mobility-impaired guests.
Non-Swimmable Beach
Strong waves, riptides, and steep offshore drop-off make ocean swimming unsafe. The heated pool is the only swimming option.
Remote Location
Located in the Tourist Corridor, 15-25 minutes by car from San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas. No walkable restaurants or nightlife beyond the property.
Limited Dining Variety
Only one restaurant on-site. While Encanto is excellent, multi-night stays benefit from the Grand Velas Day Pass for variety.

Tripadvisor
Mar del Cabo sits in the Los Cabos Tourist Corridor, perched on a terraced hillside that runs from the Transpeninsular Highway down to the Sea of Cortez. The 46 suites and two penthouses are spread across whitewashed buildings with red tile roofs, blue doors, and bougainvillea-draped paths — the aesthetic reference is Santorini filtered through Mexican artisan craft. After Velas Resorts acquired and renovated the property, reopening it in December 2018 with a $4 million investment, they repositioned it as a high-end alternative to the mega-resorts that dominate Cabo San Lucas.
The clearest differentiator is Encanto Farm & Sea, the resort's signature restaurant. Executive Chef Oscar Morales sources over 90% of ingredients from Baja California farms, orchards, and ranches within a few hours' drive. The multi-course tasting dinners with northern Baja wine pairings are genuinely the best meal available within the property's immediate vicinity, and the OpenTable rating of 4.9/5 reflects actual guest consensus rather than marketing.
The honest limitation guests frequently discover after booking: the beach is not for swimming. The Sea of Cortez here has strong riptides, steep offshore drop-offs, and wave conditions that make even wading dangerous. The resort's website and staff mention this, but guests who didn't read closely arrive expecting Caribbean-style beach swimming. The heated oceanfront pool is excellent, and the 3-mile beach is spectacular for walking, but if swimming in the ocean is central to your vacation, this is the wrong property.
Practically: 48 rooms, adults and guests 16+ only. Pet-friendly via a VIP pet program — unusual for Los Cabos luxury. Both European Plan (room-only) and all-inclusive options available. Access to adjacent Grand Velas Los Cabos at 20% discount on spa treatments and a $280-per-person day pass. Drive time from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is 20–30 minutes. The property entrance is easy to miss on the highway — GPS accuracy is important.
