Club Med Changbaishan is the brand's first forest hot springs resort in China, and that distinction isn't marketing language — the 3,000+ sq m hot spring complex with 42 indoor and outdoor pools is genuinely the main reason to choose this property. The pools include 11 dedicated traditional Chinese herbal baths and open-air hot spring pools surrounded by volcanic rock and the protected forest of the Changbaishan Biosphere Reserve. No other Club Med property offers anything comparable in wellness infrastructure.
The resort suits families and couples who want to combine mountain skiing with hot spring recovery — the combination is the point. Avid skiers seeking advanced terrain should look elsewhere: the slopes at Changbaishan skew beginner-to-lower-intermediate, and the included group ski and snowboard lessons are calibrated for families and first-timers. Experts will find the hill limiting. Non-skiing guests can still get full value from the hot springs, the indoor activities (KTV, mahjong, billiards, table tennis, cooking classes), and the cultural context of the reserve.
The honest limitation is crowd management at the hot springs. Guest reviews consistently note that the pools become crowded in the afternoons after ski return — if soaking in peace is important to you, plan morning sessions before the ski crowd returns. Also, English-speaking ski instructors are scarce; most instruction is in Mandarin, which limits non-Chinese-speaking guests' ability to get the most from the included lessons.
The resort has 102 rooms — modest scale by Club Med standards, which helps maintain a more intimate atmosphere than the brand's larger properties. It's 28 km from Baishan Changbaishan Airport (BPY), roughly 30–40 minutes by transfer. The Family Stand-alone Suites are a 5-minute walk from the main hotel building — factor this in when booking in cold weather.
The resort opened January 2022 and is currently the newest in the Club Med China portfolio. Nearby excursions to Heaven Lake (Tianchi) — a spectacular volcanic crater lake atop Changbai Mountain — are the most popular add-on and worth booking regardless of season.
