One of Cancun's Longest-Standing Beachfront Hotels Just Reopened — With a Members-Only Twist
A Hotel Zone landmark is back after a top-to-bottom renovation, and it brought an exclusive new club tier with it.
RIU Hotels & Resorts has reopened the Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun following a complete renovation, and the biggest change is who gets the best of it. The all-inclusive, a fixture of the Hotel Zone since 2012, welcomed guests back on July 25 with all 618 rooms redesigned in warm woods and natural tones — and a new adults-only Elite Club tier layered on top.
Elite Club guests get their own specialty restaurant, a private pool with a swim-up bar, premium drinks, and a guaranteed spot among the 100 best rooms in the villa area, some with private plunge pools. It is the sort of resort-within-a-resort model that RIU has been rolling out across its higher-end properties, and the Peninsula is now one of the flagships for it.
The renovation also widened the everyday offering. The resort counts nine restaurants and seven bars — including a new American Country venue inside the 24-hour sports bar and a Candy ice cream parlor — alongside six pools split among general, adults-only, Elite Club, and children's areas. Guests still get access to the four weekly RIU Party events next door at the Hotel Riu Caribe, plus a rebuilt RIU Land kids' club.
The Peninsula is one of six RIU hotels in Cancun and part of a broader push across Mexico, where the chain runs 15 properties in Quintana Roo alone. Next up: a full renovation of the Hotel Riu Palace Mexico in Playa del Carmen and a new-build Riu Palace in Costa Mujeres. For a brand that reopened the Riu Palace Aruba just days earlier, the summer has been one long ribbon-cutting.
