Hotel Riu Caribe reopened in August 2023 after a complete gut renovation, retaining its original Mayan-influenced architecture but bringing every room and public space to current standards. The result is one of the fresher properties in Cancun's Hotel Zone — and in a strip where renovation cycles vary wildly, that's meaningful. The Mayan design motifs add genuine visual character rather than generic tropics decor.
The resort is family-friendly but not exclusively so. The Riu Party pool area is the adults' domain — a dedicated pool with its own bar that hosts themed events several times a week and is accessible to guests from other Riu Cancun properties. Families get RiuLand (ages 4–12) and a children's pool; couples get the party scene plus five specialty restaurants. Both audiences coexist, which can dilute the experience for either side depending on what you're seeking.
Seven restaurants and thirteen total dining and bar venues — including a Mexican specialty restaurant (Maria Margarita) with freshly made tortillas — give this property a more varied lineup than most Cancun all-inclusives at this price tier. Formal dress codes apply at all specialty restaurants, however, so you'll need to plan evening attire.
The honest drawback: with 506 rooms across a post-renovation complex, this property draws significant occupancy and all the logistical realities that come with it — long queues, competitive sun lounger culture, and variable service speed at peak meal times. It holds Travelife Gold certification for sustainability, which matters if that's a booking criterion.
