The Wyndham Alltra Samana makes a specific promise: seclusion. Las Galeras sits on the eastern tip of the Samaná Peninsula, roughly two hours by road from the main airport. Guests who arrive expecting a resort surrounded by other resorts, a strip of shops, or nightlife will be surprised — the nearest town is a small fishing village. That isolation is either the point or a deal-breaker depending on who's traveling.
The property itself opened originally in 1999, renovated in 2014, then fully redone and reopened under the Alltra brand in December 2023. The December 2023 relaunch means the building and room finishes are fresh. The 404-room count, bungalow options, and Club-level tier give it enough variety to support different travel styles — couples in rooms, families in bungalows, adults-seeking-quiet in Club Master Suites.
The beach — Javo Beach La Playita on Samana Bay — is the property's clearest asset. White-to-golden sand, shallow safe water, some gentle waves, and a genuinely private feel. The bay's geography means calmer conditions than Atlantic-facing beaches elsewhere in the DR. Club guests access a dedicated private section of the beach with additional privacy and service.
The honest issue is dining consistency. Guest feedback is clear and repeated: the buffet at Azul is repetitive, especially on stays of five nights or longer, and service at the a la carte restaurants has been slow enough that some guests report hour-plus waits. The specialty restaurants — UMI for Japanese teppanyaki, Island Grill for Dominican-Caribbean, Bella for Italian — are genuinely interesting concepts, but execution can lag. Low season brings reduced restaurant options and closures of some common areas.
Practically: 404 rooms and bungalows, four pools including a Club-exclusive pool and an infinity pool, free scuba lessons in the pool, horseback riding included, archery, and a full non-motorized watersports program. El Catey International Airport (AZS) is about 75 km away — 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road conditions. Santo Domingo is 3.5 to 4 hours and not a practical airport option. Learning some Spanish meaningfully improves interactions with staff.
