Impeccable Cleanliness
The entire property, from rooms to public areas and grounds, is frequently commended for its high standards of cleanliness and meticulous maintenance.
Adults-Only Sanctuary
The dedicated adults-only section is highly valued for offering a quieter, more exclusive experience with its own pool, bar, and gourmet dining.
Outdated Room Decor
Rooms are generally spacious and comfortable, but many guests note their dated appearance and call for refurbishment, though an update is scheduled for 2026.
Variable Buffet Quality
While specialty restaurants are well-regarded, the main buffet food can sometimes be perceived as average, bland, or repetitive, leading to mixed dining satisfaction.
Remote Location
The resort's isolated setting provides tranquility but means there are very few attractions or activities outside the hotel, necessitating planned excursions for exploration.
Strong Ocean Currents
The beautiful ocean directly in front of the resort often experiences powerful tides and waves, making swimming challenging and advising guests to stay closer to the shore.
Inconsistent Drinks
Some guests have reported issues with alcoholic beverages, citing them as weak or inconsistent in quality, particularly for cocktails.

Hotel Riu Touareg is Boa Vista's dominant resort — with 1,151 rooms, it's the largest property on an island where the main attraction is its isolation. The beach, Praia de Lacacao, is long and genuinely beautiful, but the Atlantic surf here is serious: waves break hard and currents run strong. Swimming closer to shore is advisable, and some guests report the ocean conditions limit actual time in the water. The resort is self-contained by necessity — there isn't much else on Boa Vista — and its 24-hour all-inclusive program is designed for guests who won't need to leave.
The resort has two distinct operating zones. Families get RiuLand kids' club, two heated children's pools with slides, and the general pools and beach. Adults staying in the adults-only section get access to the Kulinarium gourmet restaurant (the only venue on property that requires reservation and is restricted to adults-only section guests), an adults-only pool, and the Renova Spa's 18+ facilities. The physical separation works reasonably well — guests consistently report being able to find quiet if they want it.
Honest caveat: the resort currently reads as 3–4 star in feel despite a 5-star classification, with décor that lags behind the price point. A full refurbishment is scheduled for summer 2026, so guests booking before then should temper their expectations on room finishes. The overall infrastructure is solid, but some areas show their age.
Practical details: 1,151 rooms, 23 minutes from Aristides Pereira International Airport (BVC), 6 pools (mix of fresh and saltwater, heated in winter), 6 restaurants, 6 bars including swim-up options. All-inclusive covers food and 24-hour drinks. Reservations required at most specialty restaurants — book on arrival day. Priced competitively for Cape Verde; the remoteness of Boa Vista limits comparison shopping.
Best season is November through May when temperatures sit in the low-to-mid 80s°F and the trade winds keep things comfortable. June through October is hotter, more humid, and wind conditions intensify — surfing season, not swimming season.
