Hotel Riu Sri Lanka occupies a unique market position: it's effectively the only large-scale all-inclusive resort operating in Sri Lanka, which means travelers who want a hassle-free package holiday to this destination have limited alternatives. The U-shaped architecture was designed to maximize sea views, and the Ahungalla beachfront setting is genuinely scenic — but the Indian Ocean here can be rough, and swimming is frequently restricted or inadvisable depending on season and surf conditions.
This works well for families and friend groups who want Sri Lanka's landscape and culture as a backdrop but don't want to manage independent travel logistics. The all-inclusive format removes the friction of a destination where infrastructure varies widely. It also functions well as a beach recovery base between sightseeing excursions — the cultural sites of the interior (temples, wildlife, tea country) are worth day trips, and the resort can arrange them.
The honest drawbacks: the 2-hour transfer from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is among the longer airport-to-resort drives of any Riu property globally. Buffet dining becomes repetitive on stays longer than 5–6 days — the Indian cuisine in particular draws comments about repetitive menus. And alcohol service is prohibited on Poya days (full moon celebrations), which happen monthly and are non-negotiable under Sri Lankan law. Check the lunar calendar if this matters to you.
Practically: 501 rooms, opened 2016 in Ahungalla on the southwest coast. Three specialty restaurants (Kaori-Asian, La Forchetta-Italian, Sauté-grill) require reservations and have fixed sittings. The main buffet, Riti Panna & Ceylon, runs all three meals with live cooking stations and Sri Lankan specialties at the breakfast spread.
