AAA
The December 2023 rebuild of Riu Palace Pacifico changed the property fundamentally. Before the renovation it was a family property; after, it's adults-only (18+) with a completely replaced physical plant — new rooms, restaurants, pools, and public areas. The 2023 format is the only relevant one for anyone booking today. The resort is positioned as a Pacific Coast alternative to the Cancun/Riviera Maya all-inclusive cluster, and Playa de Flamingos in Nuevo Vallarta is genuinely lighter on tourist infrastructure than the Caribbean side — a different character if you've done Cancun before.
The guest profile is active adults who want a social atmosphere without it tipping into party resort chaos. Multiple reviews use the word 'balanced' — the entertainment calendar has enough to do without being relentless, and the beach doesn't have vendors and music competing with the waves. Playa de Flamingos is described as seaweed-free and swimmable, which isn't guaranteed on Riviera Maya beaches that have faced seasonal sargassum problems.
The no-reservation policy at most specialty restaurants is unusual and consequential. You show up at opening time and take a table. On busy weeks this means arriving 5–10 minutes early for your preferred restaurant. The trade-off is flexibility — you don't need to commit to restaurants days in advance, and you can switch if you're not in the mood for your planned choice. The Pepe's Food grill and Tiki Taco poolside options are well-reviewed even by guests who've traveled extensively — the fresh burritos and tacos get specific mention.
Practically: 445 rooms on 24-hour all-inclusive. Nine restaurants — no reservations required except Elite Club restaurant. Three outdoor pools, one swim-up. 8 miles (12.8 km) from Puerto Vallarta Ordaz International Airport (PVR) — 20–30 minute transfer, genuinely short by resort standards. Renova Spa available for additional cost; gym, sauna, and whirlpool included.
