For snorkelers and divers, El Cid La Ceiba's location is the point. The resort sits on Cozumel's southern reef coastline, with immediate snorkeling access from stone steps into the natural pool area. The Babieca Dive Center on-site is PADI certified and operates guided reef dives, but what makes La Ceiba notable is the shallow-water airplane wreck just offshore — a Convair aircraft that was deliberately sunk as a movie prop. You can snorkel to it directly from the resort without a boat.
At 60–76 rooms, La Ceiba is one of the more intimate all-inclusives on Cozumel. The small size creates a personal atmosphere — staff learn names and preferences quickly — but also means pools get crowded when cruise ship day-pass guests are on property. Cruise ships dock within walking distance, and the resort sells day passes. If you time a visit to coincide with heavy ship traffic, your pool experience will be significantly different from what a quiet Tuesday looks like.
The resort opened in 1978 and renovated in 2006. Some rooms show their age — Deluxe rooms receive the most maintenance complaints, including thin walls, dated furnishings, and the occasional plumbing quirk. The Elite Ocean Front rooms and suites are more reliably comfortable. Wi-Fi is consistently flagged as weak in rooms and typically carries an additional charge.
The temazcal at El Cocay Spa & Temazcal Center is a genuine differentiator — a traditional Mayan steam ritual rather than a standard sauna. Most Cozumel all-inclusives don't have one. It requires booking in advance and runs as a group or private ceremony. Downtown San Miguel is a short walk or cheap taxi ride, which is useful for restaurants and shopping outside the all-inclusive plan.
