Royan Atlantique
Club Med La Palmyre Atlantique sits inside a working pine forest in Charente-Maritime, roughly equidistant between Bordeaux and La Rochelle. The forest itself is the setting — 26 hectares of maritime pines that buffer the resort from the outside world and lead directly to the Atlantic coast's long dune beaches. It's the only Club Med in mainland France with this combination of forest immersion and direct ocean access.
The resort opened in 2003 and underwent significant renovation for summer 2020. The main restaurant, The Atlantic, specifically benefits from the renovation and the regional location: fresh Atlantic oysters appear on the buffet, the local seafood is genuinely good, and the cooking quality sits above typical Club Med France properties. This is a genuine strength, not marketing language.
The audience is almost entirely French, Belgian, and Dutch — English-speaking guests consistently report a language barrier, particularly at reception. This isn't a criticism of staff, but it's useful to know before booking. If you're arriving as a non-French speaker, manage expectations about spontaneous conversation and know that the food and activity quality compensates for the communication friction.
The honest weakness in the room lineup: some categories, particularly the older Dunes bungalows described historically as camping bungalows, are small and basic. The Dunes section is quieter (near the Zen adults-only pool) but the room footprint is compact. Families needing real space should book the Golf Lodge Deluxe category specifically.
Practical context: Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is the nearest major hub at about 90 minutes; La Rochelle Airport is closer at around 60 minutes but has limited international connections. Around 17 room categories. The resort is particularly popular during French school holidays — peak crowds occur in July, August, and February, when the resort operates at full capacity and the beach can feel less secluded.
