Exceptional Staff
Guests consistently praise the resort's staff for being friendly, helpful, and attentive, often highlighting their positive impact on the overall vacation experience and making a significant difference.
Beautiful Grounds & Wildlife
The resort's immaculate and well-maintained tropical grounds, along with the frequent sightings of abundant wildlife like monkeys, are highly appreciated for enhancing the natural ambiance.
Engaging Entertainment
The active entertainment team, diverse daily programs, live music, and various activities around the main pool area receive high marks for keeping guests engaged and entertained throughout their stay.
Spacious Rooms & Minibar
Rooms are generally found to be spacious, clean, and adequately stocked, with the daily replenished mini-bar service (soft drinks and beer) being a valued and convenient amenity.
Aging Infrastructure
Many guests note that the resort is showing its age with worn finishes, rough floors, and a general need for updates and maintenance, impacting the overall perceived quality and comfort.
Inconsistent Food Quality
Dining experiences are mixed; while some enjoy the variety, many describe buffet food as average or mediocre, and a la carte options can be disappointing with difficult reservations.
Sunbed Shortage
A common complaint is the insufficient number of sunbeds around pools and on the beach, often made worse by guests reserving chairs early and leaving them unoccupied for extended periods.
Variable Room Condition
Despite some rooms being clean and adequate, many guests report issues such as lack of hot water, unpleasant smells, corroded fixtures, and poor sound insulation, indicating inconsistent room quality across the resort.
Beach & Sargassum
The beach experience can be significantly affected by the presence of seaweed (sargassum), which some guests find makes swimming less enjoyable and impacts the clarity of the water.

Best All-Inclusive Hotel in Riviera Maya
2010
Expedia
The most practical reason to choose BlueBay Grand Esmeralda over its competitors on this stretch of Riviera Maya is the unlimited à la carte restaurant policy — most similarly priced properties cap you at one or two specialty reservations per stay. Here, you can eat at the French, Japanese teppanyaki, Mexican, Italian, steakhouse, and seafood restaurants every night if you want. That policy alone makes this a better deal for foodies than its star rating would suggest.
This is a strong choice for families with children aged 2–12 who want a structured kids' club — the Mini Club runs sea turtle conservation sessions, arts and crafts, and mini circus activities across three age groups. Couples looking for a quiet adults-only atmosphere should look elsewhere; the resort's 979 rooms across eight buildings means the main pool can get loud and crowded during peak season. Teen entertainment exists but is less developed than the younger kids' program.
The honest drawback guests cite most consistently: the resort is showing its age. The last major renovation was in 2007/2008, and guests frequently mention worn hallway floors, broken gym equipment, rooms with corroded fixtures, and inconsistent hot water. A large-scale renovation was planned for 2024 — check current reviews to see how much has improved. The beach is also affected by sargassum seasonally (typically May through October), which can make swimming unpleasant and the water murky.
Practically speaking: the resort sits about 50 minutes from Cancun airport and 10–15 minutes by taxi from Playa del Carmen. The 180-hectare property is genuinely large — you'll walk significant distances between restaurants and buildings, and a golf cart isn't always immediately available. Rooms run 387 sq ft for standard categories up to 700–775 sq ft for swim-up suites with ground-floor pool access. The BlueBay Spa spans 2,500 square meters with a full hydrotherapy circuit called the "Labyrinth of Sensations."
Best seasons are November through April when sargassum is least likely to affect the beach. A cenote is reportedly accessible via a 10-minute walk from the resort's left side — worth exploring if you're here for a week or more.
