Rating8.1The included activity program is extensive for a family resort: non-motorized water sports, courts for six different sports, a kids club, and nightly shows. Paid add-ons — the surf ride, Pirates Island Water Park, PADI diving — are worthwhile for specific guests but not essential.
Multiple large freshwater pools used for general swimming and daytime activities. Can get crowded during peak weeks; arrive before 9 AM to claim a shaded lounger in a good spot.
Dedicated lanes for lap swimming. Used by early-morning fitness swimmers and largely quiet during the afternoon activity peak.
Designated 18+ zones. Noticeably calmer and less crowded than the main family pools. Worth seeking out if you need a quiet swim or an afternoon nap in a lounger.
Children's area with castles, slides, and waterfalls. Free access. Gets busy by mid-morning — earlier is better for shorter lines.
Dedicated hydro-massage feature for muscle recovery. Popular with guests who've been active with water sports or long walks to the ruins.
The paid water park's dedicated pool area with additional slide infrastructure. Extra charge applies.
Ages 13+ at extra cost. A controlled wave feature — fun once, not a daily attraction for most guests.
Select main pools have swim-up bar access. The setup works well for a social afternoon without leaving the water.
The 2-km stretch shared across the Barceló Maya Grand Resort complex is a legitimate highlight. Water is genuinely calm and clear — calm enough for casual swimming and snorkeling. The beach is well-maintained with palapas and loungers. Bring water shoes if you plan to walk the rocky sections at the far ends. Sargassum seaweed is less of an issue here than at beaches north of Playa del Carmen, but can appear during summer months.
Snorkeling equipment (1 hour/day), kayaking, paddleboarding, basic sailing on a Hobie Wave, windsurfing, and water tricycles — all included. Snorkeling directly off the beach is a genuine highlight given the reef proximity.
Pool aerobics, water polo, and a weekly introductory scuba lesson in the pool. The scuba lesson is a good taster for first-timers before committing to a paid PADI course.
Tennis, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, paddle tennis, and soccer courts with equipment provided. Useful for groups or active travelers who need a daily workout that isn't pool-based.
18-hole mini-golf, table tennis, darts, giant chess, pool tables. Better for family afternoon fill-in than serious recreation.
Complimentary sessions available on the activity schedule. Fun for kids and adults equally.
Equipped with spinning, cardio, and strength machines. Located in the U-Spa building shared across the complex.
Daily yoga, fitness classes, and aqua aerobics included. Worth checking the schedule at check-in to plan around.
Ages 4–12, runs 9 AM–5 PM and reopens 7–8:30 PM. Supervised with structured activities. The evening session is particularly useful for parents wanting a dinner without children.
Second supervised club near the Caribe Beach pool, 9 AM–5 PM. Provides overflow capacity during peak weeks.
Free for children — castles, slides, and waterfalls within a dedicated pool area. Appropriate for ages roughly 3–10.
Outdoor play equipment available anytime with adult supervision.
Coordinated by entertainment staff throughout the day. Quality varies by season and staffing — check the daily schedule rather than assuming what's available.
Evening performances at Kukulcán and Palenque theaters with drinks included. Generally well-produced for a resort show.
Live performances throughout the resort's common areas in the evening. Varies by night.
Open 11 PM–2 AM with included drinks. Loud — rooms near the entertainment strip will hear it.
Latin rhythm instruction included. Popular with couples, genuinely fun as an afternoon activity.
Paid PADI courses and dive tours available. The Riviera Maya has excellent reef diving — worth it for certified divers.
Jet skiing and deep-sea fishing at extra cost. Jet skis available directly from the beach.
Paid add-on, ages 13+. A wave machine in a pool format — novelty activity rather than a substitute for actual surfing.
Paid, all-ages. Additional slides beyond the free Barcy Water Park. Worth the cost for families with kids who've exhausted the included waterpark.
For children under 4, requires 24-hour advance booking at extra cost per hour.
Extra charge. Extends court time into the evening — useful in the hot afternoon months when daytime play is uncomfortable.
Tulum ruins, cenotes, and Playa del Carmen tours organized at extra cost. Nearby Cenote Azul and Cenote Cristalino are walkable — do those yourself to save the excursion markup.
