This Playacar Family Favorite Reopens This Week — But the Kids Are Staying Home

One of the best-known beachfront all-inclusives in the gated Playacar community is back on Sept. 5 after months of renovation — and it is returning as a very different resort. Hotel Riu Palace Mexico, long a family staple just south of Playa del Carmen, is reopening as an adults-only property, one of the clearest signs yet of where the Riviera Maya all-inclusive market is heading.

Riu Hotels & Resorts closed the property in early May for a top-to-bottom overhaul. The refurbishment touches the guest rooms and every communal space, and it comes wrapped in the brand's minimalist "White Palace" look, with bright white facades and pared-back modern furnishings replacing the older tropical styling.

The adults-only switch drives most of the changes inside. Spaces once built for children have been reworked into an expanded wellness offering, including an outdoor hydrotherapy circuit and a new terrace, alongside a fresh sports bar and the same stretch of Playacar's white-sand beach the resort has always fronted.

Why the change matters. Playacar has traditionally leaned family-friendly, so converting a flagship Riu into an adults-only resort is a notable repositioning for the area. It also fits a broader pattern across the Mexican Caribbean, where operators are carving out adults-only product to compete with a wave of new luxury openings.

The reopening is part of a larger Riu push to modernize its older Mexican Caribbean hotels. The company recently brought back Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun after its own renovation, adding premium Elite Club rooms and swim-up categories. Together, the two projects show Riu betting that refreshed, more upscale versions of its established resorts can hold their own against the newer competition arriving up and down the coast.
