This Longtime Playa del Carmen Beach Hotel Reopens Next Month — With One Big Change to Who Can Book It

One of Playa del Carmen's best-known beachfront hotels is coming back — and it won't be the same crowd on the sand. Hotel Riu Palace Mexico reopens September 5 following a comprehensive renovation, and when it does, it will operate as an adults-only resort for the first time.

The shift repositions a familiar family property for the couples-and-groups market that has driven much of the recent growth in the Riviera Maya. Riu has been steadily moving several of its Mexican flagships toward adults-only or premium concepts, betting that the higher-spending adult traveler is where the demand is heading.

The renovation touches the guts of the hotel. Rooms have been completely redesigned around warm woods and natural tones, part of a top-to-bottom refresh of the property's facilities and services rather than a cosmetic update.

The reopening is the latest step in a busy renovation year for Riu Hotels & Resorts. The company recently brought back Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun on July 25 after its own major refurbishment, redesigning all 618 of its rooms. Taken together, the two projects show Riu reinvesting heavily in its longest-standing Mexican Caribbean properties instead of leaning only on new construction.

For travelers who knew the old Riu Palace Mexico, the message is clear: the beach and the address stay the same, but the experience — and the guest list — is being rebuilt for a different kind of vacation.
