This Playa del Carmen All-Inclusive Reopens Next Month — and Kids Aren't Welcome Anymore
After months behind construction fences, a familiar Playacar resort returns on Sept. 5 with a change that will divide its regulars: it's going adults-only.
Hotel Riu Palace Mexico, a beachfront fixture in the Playacar development just south of central Playa del Carmen, is set to reopen on Sept. 5 after a comprehensive renovation that closed the property on May 4. The bigger news is what changes when the doors open: the resort will operate as an adults-only, 18-and-over all-inclusive.
The shift moves one of Riu Hotels & Resorts' longest-running Mexican Caribbean properties out of the family market and into the couples-and-groups category that has been driving demand across the Riviera Maya. Adults-only inventory has expanded quickly along this coast, and converting an established, well-located resort is a faster path to that market than building from scratch.
The overhaul touches guestrooms and public spaces, with Riu's typical refresh of dining venues, pools and common areas. Guests who knew the property in its previous form will find redesigned rooms and updated restaurants when it returns.
The reopening caps a busy stretch for the brand in Mexico. Riu recently brought back Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun following its own renovation, and the company continues to cycle older properties through top-to-bottom updates rather than let them age. Riu also operates the neighboring Hotel Riu Playacar, keeping a strong footprint in the same beach enclave.
For travelers who booked the property expecting a family stay, the adults-only switch is worth confirming before arrival. For everyone else, it adds another quiet-focused option in a part of Playa del Carmen known for its calm beach and easy walk into town.
