The gated Playacar community sits at the southern edge of Playa del Carmen — quiet, secure, and separated from Fifth Avenue's noise while remaining walkable to the town center. Hotel Riu Playacar went through a complete rebuild in 2015, and the 2015 fabric is the relevant reference point. What you're getting is one of Riu's fresher Classic-tier properties in the Riviera Maya: 396 rooms and suites, four restaurants, four pools including a swim-up bar, and direct access to a white-sand Caribbean beach that's seaweed-managed daily by staff.
This resort works for families and couples who want a well-functioning all-inclusive within reach of Playa del Carmen's town center — the 5th Avenue shopping and restaurant strip is accessible on foot or a short taxi ride. Guests who want complete isolation won't find it here; the Playacar community is active and the resort shares a beach area with neighboring properties. But for guests who want a competent Caribbean base with access to the town, Riu Playacar delivers without surprises.
The main drawback: beach umbrellas are not provided on the resort's beach section. The Riviera Maya sun is intense year-round, and the absence of shade on the sand forces guests either to the pool deck or to purchase umbrellas from vendors. This is a recurring complaint and a legitimate one — budget accordingly.
Practical details: 396 rooms, 45 minutes from Cancun International Airport. Cross-resort bar access at Riu Yucatan and Riu Tequila within the Playacar complex is included — transportation between the three resorts is not always provided. Pacha Disco at Riu Tequila is a significant nightlife bonus. All-inclusive covers 24-hour dining, stocked room minibars with liquor dispensers, and all on-site bars.
