Marriott Is Converting Three Beloved Playa del Carmen Resorts to All-Inclusive — Under a Brand That's Never Been Here

Marriott is deepening its all-inclusive push in Mexico with a deal to convert three longtime Playa del Carmen properties operated by The Reef Resorts & Spa. The agreement brings 676 rooms into Marriott's pipeline and marks the first time the company's Tribute Portfolio soft brand has appeared in the beach town.

The three properties are The Reef Playacar Beachfront Resort & Spa, the adults-only The Reef 28, and The Reef Coco Beachfront Resort & Spa. Renovations are slated to begin in late 2026, with all three expected to join the portfolio in 2027. The Reef Coco is also set to grow, expanding from 198 rooms to 358 by 2028.

Tribute Portfolio is a collection brand, meaning each hotel keeps its own name and character rather than adopting a uniform flag. That fits The Reef's existing following: Marriott says the renovations are designed to preserve the individuality that made the resorts repeat favorites, rather than scrub it away.

The move continues a steady march of major hotel companies into the all-inclusive category along Mexico's Caribbean coast. Marriott already runs all-inclusive resorts under its Marriott All-Inclusive banner, and converting existing, well-located properties lets it add inventory faster than building from the ground up.

For travelers, the deal means three familiar Playa del Carmen resorts will eventually carry Marriott Bonvoy benefits, including points earning and elite recognition. It also adds competition in a stretch of the Riviera Maya that has become one of the most contested all-inclusive markets in the hemisphere, with new and rebranded properties arriving almost monthly.
