Marriott Just Claimed Three Longtime Playa del Carmen Resorts — and One Is Nearly Doubling in Size
Marriott is converting a trio of familiar Playa del Carmen beach resorts to all-inclusive under a 2027 rebrand.
Marriott International has signed an agreement with The Reef Resorts & Spa to convert three of its Playa del Carmen beachfront properties into all-inclusive resorts, adding 676 rooms to the company's fast-growing all-inclusive lineup.
The three resorts will join Marriott's Tribute Portfolio all-inclusive collection in 2027, with renovations starting in late 2026. The lineup includes the 198-room The Reef Playacar Beachfront Resort & Spa and the adults-only, 120-room The Reef 28 Luxury Hotel & Spa.
The third property, The Reef Coco Beachfront Resort & Spa, is the headline: it will grow from 198 rooms to 358 by 2028, nearly doubling its footprint. Together the resorts will also add meeting and event capacity for groups of up to 900.
The deal keeps a well-known local operator in place while handing it Marriott's Bonvoy loyalty platform and global distribution. For Mexico, it is another sign that the country remains the center of gravity for branded all-inclusive growth. Marriott has been layering the model across the Caribbean and Latin America, and its Marriott All-Inclusive push now spans multiple brands from JW Marriott down to conversion collections like Tribute Portfolio.
The Reef's properties sit in Playacar and along the Playa del Carmen beachfront, minutes from the Fifth Avenue pedestrian strip. Rebranding preserves each resort's identity while shifting them to the unlimited-inclusions format that now dominates guest demand on the Riviera Maya. Renovation timelines mean guests should expect phased upgrades before the official 2027 switchover.
