One of Cancun's largest beachfront all-inclusives is about to come back online. Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula, a more than 500-room property in the heart of the Hotel Zone, reopens July 25 after closing in early April for a comprehensive renovation.

The overhaul is the visible half of a $180 million investment Riu Hotels & Resorts is pouring into two of its flagship Mexican Caribbean properties. At the Peninsula, the work touches guestrooms, pools and bars, adds new restaurant options, and introduces an Elite Club area — Riu's premium tier with upgraded amenities and dedicated spaces for guests who want a more exclusive layer inside a large resort.

The second property is undergoing a bigger identity shift. Hotel Riu Palace Mexico, in the Playacar section of Playa del Carmen, closed in May and is scheduled to reopen September 5 as an adults-only resort — a notable pivot for a hotel that spent years as a family favorite. The change follows a broader industry trend of segmenting resorts toward couples and adults seeking quieter, more exclusive stays.

Both moves reinforce how competitive Cancun and Playa del Carmen have become. Visitor numbers keep climbing, new luxury openings keep arriving, and older beachfront stalwarts increasingly have to renovate or risk looking dated next to fresh arrivals. For Riu, keeping its Palace properties current in prime beachfront real estate is less a luxury than a requirement.

Travelers with existing bookings around the reopening should confirm dates directly, since reopening timelines can shift. But if the schedule holds, the refreshed Peninsula will be taking guests again within a week.
