Overview

El Cid Castilla is the beachfront anchor of the four-property El Cid complex in Mazatlán, and its biggest advantage is the inter-resort shuttle system. All-inclusive guests can take a complimentary shuttle every 15 minutes to El Cid El Moro, Granada, and Marina — effectively giving you access to around eight restaurants, multiple pools, and a 27-hole golf course at El Cid Golf & Country Club across the street from Granada. For a mid-range all-inclusive, that range is the main reason to choose this property over standalone Mazatlán alternatives.

This resort works well for families with children 4 to 17: the Kids Club (ages 4–12) offers structured daily programming including snorkeling lessons, cooking classes, and piñata parties, while the separate Teen Lounge (13–17) gives older kids their own space. The multi-pool complex with two free-form pools and water slides keeps the younger crowd occupied. Couples looking for quiet will find the family-forward atmosphere less relaxing — the pool deck is consistently loud between 10am and 4pm.

The main complaint in guest reviews is pool chair availability. At 500 rooms, the pool fills quickly, and the unwritten rule is that guests start claiming chairs before 7am. A secondary issue: the all-inclusive plan's fine print includes surcharges on premium items like lobster, jumbo shrimp, and Chateaubriand even within the included restaurants — something worth knowing before you order.

Established in 1982 and renovated in 2009, Castilla shows some age in the rooms despite the remodel. The 15-story tower provides good ocean views from higher floors — request Ocean View Room on floors 10 and up. The General Rafael Buelna Airport is 28 km away, roughly 30 minutes. Room service carries an additional charge even on the all-inclusive plan.

Pros

  • +Inter-resort shuttle runs every 15 minutes, effectively tripling your restaurant and activity options at no extra cost
  • +El Cid Golf & Country Club is one of Mazatlán's best 27-hole courses and accessible from the Granada sister property
  • +Kids Club (4–12) runs structured activities including snorkeling lessons and cooking classes — genuinely educational programming
  • +Direct Pacific beachfront with decent surf conditions for boogie boarding

Cons

  • −Pool chairs need to be claimed before 7am on busy days — this is not an exaggeration; the pool-to-room ratio creates genuine competition
  • −Surcharges apply to lobster, jumbo shrimp, and premium steaks even on the all-inclusive plan — check the menu before ordering
  • −Coffee Spot café charges extra — there's no included specialty coffee option
  • −Rooms show age despite the 2009 renovation; expectations should be mid-range, not luxury

Tips

  • Book El Alcázar (Italian) and La Cascada (Mexican) at the front desk immediately at check-in — they fill the same day
  • Take the shuttle to El Cid Marina for the most scenic dining — La Marina restaurant overlooks the marina basin and is a worthwhile change of scenery
  • Request ocean view on floor 10 or higher when booking — the Pacific views significantly improve the room experience
  • Negotiate prices with pulmonias (open-air taxis) before getting in — drivers quote tourist rates first
  • October through early December is low season with shorter waits and cheaper rates — weather is still warm and dry
