This 618-Room Cancun Resort Reopened With an Adults-Only Zone Hidden Inside a Family Hotel
Riu's beachfront Cancun landmark is back after a full renovation — and it now runs two very different experiences under one roof.
One of Cancun's best-known beachfront all-inclusives has reopened after a top-to-bottom renovation, and it returns with a twist: an adults-only enclave tucked inside a family resort. The Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula is back in service following a full refurbishment of its 618 rooms and public spaces.
The headline change is the new Elite Club, a premium adults-only tier carved out of the property's former adults-only villa area. Elite guests get some of the best rooms in the hotel — several with private pools — plus dedicated service, while the rest of the resort keeps its family-friendly programming. It's a hedge that lets one address court both couples and families at once.
The renovation reworked the look throughout, trading the old palette for natural tones and warm wood across the rooms, lobby, bars and restaurants. The redesigned lobby pulls in more light, and the reworked District bar frames Caribbean Sea views through large windows. Two new dining concepts join the lineup, alongside six pools and the resort's roster of themed restaurants spanning steakhouse, Japanese, Italian and Mexican.
The reopening fits a broader push by Riu Hotels & Resorts to modernize its older Cancun stock rather than build new. Several of the brand's Mexico properties have cycled through renovations recently, part of an effort to keep pace with the wave of new and upgraded all-inclusives crowding the Mexican Caribbean.
