This Playa del Carmen All-Inclusive Reopens Next Week — With One Big Change for Families
A longtime family resort in Playacar is coming back from a full renovation, and it won't welcome the same guests it used to.
A familiar beachfront all-inclusive in the gated Playacar community is about to reopen — but not for everyone who used to stay there. The Hotel Riu Palace Mexico returns on September 5, 2026 after a full renovation, relaunching as an adults-only resort for guests 18 and over.
The property closed in early May for a top-to-bottom overhaul of rooms and common areas. For years it operated as a family-friendly resort in Playa del Carmen; the shift to adults-only moves it closer to RIU's couples-focused offerings in the region and reshapes who the hotel is built for.
The refresh adds a new spa and a sports bar, along with a pickleball court with equipment provided — a nod to one of the faster-growing amenities at resorts chasing active travelers. Rooms and public spaces have been redesigned to lean into a quieter, more grown-up atmosphere.
The reopening is part of a broader RIU investment push across the Mexican Caribbean. The company recently brought back the RIU Palace Peninsula in Cancun's hotel zone after its own renovation, part of a cycle of upgrades meant to keep established properties competitive in one of the world's densest all-inclusive markets, spanning Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
For couples, the timing is convenient: the adults-only relaunch lands just ahead of the fall shoulder season, when Playa del Carmen tends to see softer crowds and easier pricing than the winter peak.
