Sun Palace is the smallest of the Palace Hotels properties in Cancun — 143 suites on a beachfront stretch in the Hotel Zone's southern end. The scale is the defining characteristic: this isn't a sprawling campus with multiple pools and competing entertainment zones. It's a compact, couples-focused property where the goal is intimacy rather than variety. Every suite comes standard with a double whirlpool tub, which is unusual as a built-in baseline rather than an upgrade.
The property opened around 2007 and underwent a comprehensive renovation in September 2020 — which updated interiors, suites, the lobby, and dining options. The renovation timing (during pandemic-era low occupancy) gave the team time to redo the property thoroughly, and rooms feel relatively current as a result. The southernmost section of Cancun's Hotel Zone is calmer and less densely developed than the northern stretch, which suits the romantic-escape positioning.
Cancun airport (CUN) is 12 to 30 minutes away depending on traffic — the Hotel Zone traffic patterns mean the transfer time varies significantly during peak periods. The Palace Elite membership program offers potential perks for repeat guests including discounted stays and free services, but this comes with associated sales presentations during the stay that some guests find intrusive.
Food quality at Sun Palace gets genuinely strong reviews for the specialty dinner restaurants — particularly the steak-focused Fuego and the Italian Trattoria. The international buffet for breakfast and lunch is where consistency dips. Using the Fuego breakfast as an à la carte alternative to the buffet is something regulars recommend.
