The Stunning Beach
Guests universally praise the resort's private, white-sand beach with calm, clear turquoise waters, often cited as one of the best in the area for swimming and relaxation.
Exceptional Staff Service
The staff consistently receives high commendations for being friendly, attentive, helpful, and hardworking, significantly contributing to a positive guest experience.
Charming Property Layout
The resort's intimate design with low-rise, Caribbean-style bungalows set amidst lush, well-maintained gardens creates a private and relaxing atmosphere, enhanced by local wildlife.
Prime Location
Its convenient location within walking distance to Playacar and close proximity to Playa del Carmen's bustling Fifth Avenue is a major highlight, offering easy access to local attractions.
Dining Variety & Reservations
The buffet food can be repetitive, and guests frequently express frustration with the difficult and time-consuming process for securing reservations at the à la carte restaurants.
Inconsistent Room Quality
Despite recent renovations, some guests report receiving older, darker rooms with outdated furniture, uncomfortable beds, or maintenance issues like air conditioning leaks or shower problems.
Weak Drinks & Tipping
Many guests note that the included alcoholic beverages are weak, with some implying that more generous tipping might lead to stronger drinks or better service at bars.
Potential Extra Costs
Guests should be aware of additional mandatory fees, such as an Ecological Fee, and extra charges for premium services like motorized water sports, spa treatments, or certain excursions.

The Polynesian-style bungalows at Allegro Playacar are not a design gimmick — they're the reason people choose this resort over the dozens of other all-inclusives along the Riviera Maya. Thatched roofs, lush garden pathways between buildings, and hammocks on private terraces create an atmosphere that feels distinct from the resort-block aesthetic elsewhere in Playa del Carmen. The property sits inside the gated Playacar residential community, which means the beach access is genuinely private and calm rather than shared with unaffiliated day visitors.
This works well for families, couples, and friend groups who want the all-inclusive format with some visual personality. The kids' club (ages 4–12) runs 10 AM–5 PM with a full schedule. The beach has calm, clear water suitable for young children. Couples who want a romantic atmosphere will find the bungalow gardens deliver it. The resort is not a good fit for guests who prioritize room size — 280 sq ft bungalows are cozy by any standard — or who expect contemporary hotel design.
The honest limitation here is the dining setup. Four specialty restaurants (Mexican, Italian, Asian, plus a pizzeria) are genuinely good but require reservations that go fast. The Topaz buffet handles breakfast and dinner for most guests most nights. It's fine, but guests who eat every meal at a buffet for a week tend to notice the repetition. The pizzeria and snack & grill help fill the gaps midday.
Practical details: 286 rooms in bungalow format, 45–54 minutes from Cancun Airport (CUN). Directly on the beach inside the Playacar gated zone. Spa expanded in 2024 with hydrotherapy baths and steam room. Three pools (activity, relaxation, children's). Price positions toward the mid-range of Playa del Carmen all-inclusives. The gated Playacar location means you can walk safely to restaurants in the adjacent Playacar Phase 1 neighborhood — a useful option for breaking up resort meals.
Best season is November through April. Hurricane season (August–October) brings humidity and risk, but prices drop meaningfully.
