Overview

Location is what makes Viva Tangerine work. Cabarete is one of the world's recognized windsurfing and kitesurfing destinations — the consistent trade winds and flat water inside the reef make it a technical sailing venue that attracts serious water sports participants from Europe and North America. Viva Tangerine is the only all-inclusive in town, which means active travelers who want an all-inclusive structure with proper wind sport access have exactly one option.

For guests not interested in wind sports, the case is different. Cabarete is a beach town with a lively strip of independent restaurants, bars, and surf shops — more social and rougher around the edges than the manicured resort zones of Punta Cana or Playa Dorada. The beach itself is busy, semi-public, and part of an active town rather than a private resort compound. If you're looking for a contained, quiet resort environment, this is not the right fit.

The property underwent a $9.5 million renovation in 2016 covering all rooms, restaurants, bars, lobby, and pool areas. That renovation is now approaching a decade old, and some guest reviews note that the freshness has faded in parts. The resort has 314 rooms and is a practical, well-run property for what it is: a base camp for people who want to be in Cabarete.

Practically: 314 rooms, four restaurants (international buffet plus three à la carte), 20–30 minutes from Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP). Windsurfing, kitesurfing demonstrations, and introductory diving lessons are included. The 'Stay at 1, Play at 2' exchange links to Viva Heavens in Playa Dorada — useful if you're making a day trip but not a daily dining option given the distance.

Pros

  • +The only all-inclusive in Cabarete — active travelers who want consistent trade winds, proper wind sports, and an all-inclusive wrapper have no alternative
  • +Cabarete's independent restaurant and bar strip is walkable from the resort — a built-in option for evenings when you want something outside the property
  • +20–30 minute transfer from Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP) is one of the shorter airport connections on the Dominican Republic's north coast

Cons

  • −The beach is semi-public and part of the town — guests expecting a private, controlled beach environment will find Cabarete's social beach atmosphere a mismatch
  • −The 2016 renovation is aging and some guest reviews report finishes starting to show wear

Tips

  • If kitesurfing is your primary goal, visit the local schools in Cabarete town directly — they have IKO/VDWS-certified instructors and are within walking distance of the resort at better rates than most resort-affiliated programs
  • The Cabarete restaurant strip runs parallel to the beach road — try it for at least one dinner to sample what the town offers beyond the resort menu
  • For wind sports, the afternoon window (noon to 5 PM) has the strongest and most consistent trades — schedule anything non-aquatic for the morning
