Sandals Dunn's River essentially relaunched in 2023. The resort that operated from 1991 was stripped down and rebuilt from scratch — reopening May 24, 2023 with entirely new rooms, public spaces, restaurants, and pools. What guests are booking now is effectively a new property at an established Sandals location. This is a meaningful distinction: you're not going to an aging resort with a renovation coat; the build is recent throughout.
The SkyPool Butler Suites are the headline accommodation: suites positioned at height with a private sky pool on the terrace. The Rondoval Villas — circular-walled swim-up units with a private pool sanctuary — are a Sandals signature that appears at only a few properties. Both categories are the type of rooms that appear on Instagram; they're genuinely distinctive and not just marketing language.
Dunn's Rum Club is a dedicated rum bar and experience room on-site — a recognition that Jamaica has one of the world's great rum traditions and that Sandals guests in Ocho Rios want to engage with it. This is the kind of specific amenity that makes a property feel locally connected rather than interchangeable.
Mammee Bay beach is private and genuinely beautiful. The honest drawback: the transfer from Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay is 90 minutes — among the longer transfers for a Sandals property. Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) in Boscobel is about 20–30 minutes away and worth considering if you can get a connecting flight. The Stay at 1, Play at 2 access to Sandals Ochi adds more dining and activity options. Golf at Upton Estate Golf & Country Club is included.
