Iberostar Waves Punta Cana runs a working coral laboratory — not a display tank but an active scientific facility where endangered coral species are cultivated for reef restoration. It's the only resort in the world operating a lab at this scale, and it's one of the two reasons a travel agent would specifically recommend this property over comparable Punta Cana all-inclusives. The second reason is the 18-hole P.B. Dye golf course, which is on the property itself rather than a bus ride away.
The resort was built in 1997 and last renovated substantially in 2003. That age shows in the rooms. Guests who've stayed at newer properties in Punta Cana frequently mention dated furnishings and fixtures. If the physical product is a priority and budget permits, there are more recently renovated alternatives on the same stretch of beach. If golf, the coral program, or value pricing is the deciding factor, the tradeoff is reasonable.
This is a family-forward property. The Star Camp kids club splits into age groups (Monkey for 4-7, Dolphin for 8-12, Eagle for 13-17) and runs daily. Three pools, including a dedicated children's pool, plus one hour per day of complimentary non-motorized watersports — Hobie Cat sailing, kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing — are included. The Aliveness wellness program is another differentiator: designed to integrate nature connection into the daily stay through specific activities and dining options.
The beach is Blue Flag certified and sits on the Bávaro stretch that UNESCO has recognized. Staff manage sargassum seaweed daily, but buildup is worse from May through September. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is 19 to 26 km away — approximately 21 to 28 minutes by transfer.
