Beautiful Grounds & Pools
The resort's tropical gardens, well-maintained grounds, and spacious, clean pool areas are frequently highlighted as beautiful and inviting. These aesthetic qualities create a relaxing and enjoyable environment.
Activities for All Ages
A wide array of activities, including daily sports, non-motorized water sports, and vibrant nightly entertainment, ensure engagement for families and guests of all ages. The dedicated kids' club, Star Camp, is particularly well-regarded.
Pristine Cleanliness
The resort consistently earns excellent marks for its cleanliness across all areas, from common spaces to guest rooms. This commitment to hygiene enhances the comfort and appeal for visitors.
Room Modernization Needed
While generally clean, some guests find the rooms to be somewhat dated in their decor and amenities, suggesting a need for renovation to match modern expectations. Future guests might encounter ongoing updates.
Variable Beach Conditions
The direct beach access is valued, but reviews occasionally note issues with seaweed, minor garbage, or a muddy seabed. Beach quality can fluctuate depending on natural factors and can sometimes impact the overall experience.
Air Conditioning & Smoke
Recurring reports mention inconsistent air conditioning performance in some rooms, which can impact comfort during warm periods. Additionally, cigarette smoke in public lobby areas can be a concern for non-smokers seeking a completely fresh environment.
Weekend Guest Dynamics
During peak weekends, an influx of local guests has sometimes led to reports of crowded facilities and occasional negative interactions. Being aware of this dynamic can help manage expectations regarding resort atmosphere.

Puerto Plata's north coast doesn't compete with Punta Cana for sheer beach volume, but Costa Dorada's stretch is genuinely award-winning — a wide, golden-sand beach with calmer water than the Atlantic-facing resorts further east. Iberostar Costa Dorada sits directly on it, a fact that matters more than any amenity list. The colonial-style architecture distinguishes it visually from the concrete-block resorts that dominate the strip, and after a 2011 renovation the 516-room property maintains its look effectively.
The resort's five specialty restaurants are a real differentiator at this price tier: La Hacienda (Mexican), El Rodizio (Brazilian churrasco), Sakura (Japanese teppanyaki), Mare Nostrum (Italian/Mediterranean poolside), and the main buffet El Mercado. For an all-inclusive in the Dominican Republic, having a proper teppanyaki performance restaurant is unusual and consistently rated as a highlight. The EarthCheck sustainability certification is also genuine — this isn't greenwashing.
Where the resort falls short: the all-inclusive program has been cited for limitations on beverages (domestic drinks are included, certain international brands carry charges), and some guests report the specialty restaurant dress code enforcement is stricter than expected. The dress code is real — men need collared shirts and pants or formal bermuda shorts at dinner, including at the buffet.
Practical notes: 516 rooms, 20–25 minutes from Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP). A pool renovation is scheduled August–October 2026 — avoid booking during that window if pools are central to your plan. The Star Camp kids' club covers ages 4–17 in three tiers, which is more comprehensive than most competitors at this price point.
