Rating8.1Adults OnlyThe activity list is comprehensive for an all-inclusive. Non-motorized water sports (windsurfing, SUP, snorkeling, kayaking) are included from the beach. The Splash Water World water park is on-site and included. The on-site casino and Pacha discotheque add nightlife options, though note that drinks at both are not covered by the all-inclusive wristband — a notable exception to Riu's standard policy.
The central pool for general guest use. The animation team's primary activity zone. Largest pool on the property.
Pool with swim-up bar access. One of two swim-up bar pools. Gets competitive for loungers during peak periods.
Second swim-up bar pool. The Guarro (scarlet macaw in Spanish) branding fits the Costa Rican wildlife theme. Similar atmosphere to Santa Cruz but potentially less crowded if guests gravitate to the other bar.
Added in the 2025 expansion. The family-designated pool in the newer wing of the property. Adjacent to family room categories.
Very shallow pool for youngest guests. Safe and supervised zone.
On-site water park — included in the rate. Multiple slide types with height minimums for the larger slides. Open six days a week.
Included jacuzzi facility. Adults only.
Black volcanic sand beach — visually unlike the white Caribbean beaches at most Riu all-inclusives. The dark sand absorbs heat faster and can get very hot underfoot by midday. The Pacific swells make for genuine wave activity — boogie boarding and bodyboarding are real activities here. Swimmable for confident swimmers; the wave break requires attention with young children. Sea turtles nest on this stretch of Costa Rica's Pacific coast seasonally — the concierge can arrange turtle-watching tours. Loungers and umbrellas included.
Included equipment from the beach. The Pacific coast trade winds at Matapalo make this a genuine activity rather than a token offering. Instruction available at extra cost.
Boards included. More challenging than at calm-water resorts due to the Pacific swell — better for guests with some balance experience.
Included. Costa Rica's Pacific coast has marine life including sea turtles in season.
