The adults-only beachfront infinity pool — with its unobstructed promenade and ocean view — is the visual centerpiece of the refurbished Riu Gran Canaria, and it's the detail that separates this property from other Maspalomas all-inclusives. Opened originally in 2000 and fully refurbished in 2023, the 639-room property hits a sweet spot: large enough to have proper facilities across the board, but not so large that it loses any sense of atmosphere.
The Riu4U teen program for ages 13–17 is worth highlighting for family bookers. Most all-inclusives stop at the kids' club age bracket (12 and under) and leave teenagers to fend for themselves. The Riu4U program runs several times weekly with activities specifically designed for that age group — it doesn't run daily, so check the schedule, but it addresses a genuine gap. Combined with the standard RiuLand kids' club for ages 4–12, this is one of the more comprehensively family-programmed Riu properties in Europe.
The honest criticism: the food program gets decent but not enthusiastic reviews. The main buffet (Las Dunas) cycles through competent international fare, and the specialty restaurants — Italian Amore Mio, Asian Kaori, Canarian/grill Atlántico, and gourmet Kulinarium — require reservations and fill quickly during peak season (Christmas, Easter, summer). Guests who don't secure reservations early often fall back to the buffet more nights than they intended. The all-inclusive drinks are consistently described in reviews as sweet and underpowered — if cocktail quality matters to you, expectations should be set accordingly.
Practically: 639 rooms, 34–37 km from Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), about a 27-minute transfer. Three beaches within walking distance: Playa de las Meloneras is the closest (on the doorstep), Playa de Maspalomas and its famous sand dunes are 15 minutes on foot. The 2023 refurbishment means the rooms and common areas are in good condition — this is meaningfully different from the pre-2023 reviews which noted worn fixtures. The resort holds a Best Large Hotel designation in the 2025 Global Hotel Awards.
