Excellence Punta Cana opened in 2000 and closed for a $45 million renovation in 2017, reopening in November of that year with updated rooms, restaurants, and public areas across the colonial-style campus. The 461-suite resort sits in Uvero Alto — a quieter, less-developed stretch of the Dominican Republic's eastern coast, about 44 km (30–45 minutes) from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). The resort's most distinctive physical feature is a giant river-style pool that winds through the landscaped grounds, past suites and restaurants. A separate botanical garden gives the property a sense of considered design that its main competitor resorts in Punta Cana lack.
This is an adults-only property (18+) built for couples. Service is frequently cited as the strongest operational advantage — staff-to-guest ratios feel high, and repeat guests cite staff by name across multiple reviews. The all-inclusive program is legitimately comprehensive: premium alcohol throughout, fully stocked in-room minibars, and no reservation requirements at most of the 11 restaurants.
The beach at Uvero Alto is attractive but has real limitations. The waves are strong — strong enough that calm lap swimming is difficult. The beach is beautiful for walking and lounging, and water sports are productive, but guests expecting to paddle around in a pool-calm sea will be disappointed. This is the most consistent guest complaint.
Humidity is the other recurring issue. The colonial-style architecture has less aggressive air conditioning than modern builds, and some rooms retain heat and moisture. Requesting a dehumidifier at check-in is a widely shared guest tip, not a rarity. Overall price tier is upper-luxury, similar to Excellence Playa Mujeres and meaningfully above mid-market Dominican competition.
Excellence Club is an upgrade tier that adds private pool access, a dedicated Club restaurant (Magna), upgraded room amenities (Nespresso, L'Occitane toiletries), private beach cabanas, and express check-in. Worth the premium for guests who will actually use the exclusive spaces.
