Club Med South Africa Beach and Safari is the brand's first resort in sub-Saharan Africa and its first dual-property concept anywhere. The beach resort, named Tinley Manor, sits on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, 30 minutes from King Shaka International Airport (Durban). The Mpilo Safari Lodge (also known as Vikela) sits in a separate 18,000-hectare private game reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal — accessible by 4.5-hour drive or 40-minute charter flight from the beach property. Both properties open July 2026 as a new build.
The concept is a genuine structural innovation: guests can book the beach property alone, or add a multi-night safari segment. The safari experience includes game drives and bush walks in a private reserve — not a national park accessible to the public, which is a meaningful distinction in terms of animal density and experience quality. The beach property's own differentiator is the surf school: Club Med's first-ever dedicated surf program with four lessons daily, designed for the Dolphin Coast's consistent beach break.
Who this targets: families wanting two experiences in one trip without multiple airports, couples combining Indian Ocean beach time with Big Five game viewing, and active travelers who want novelty rather than repetition. The price tier sits at Club Med's premium all-inclusive level. Because neither property has opened at the time of writing, no guest review data exists — the design and concept are well-documented but operational reality is unknown.
Practically: the beach resort has 411 rooms; Mpilo Safari Lodge has 20–80 safari tented rooms. Kids' clubs run from 4 months to 17 years at the beach property. The Tinley Manor beach is on the Dolphin Coast — named for the humpback and bottlenose dolphins that frequent the inshore waters — with natural dune protection and warm Indian Ocean surf.
