Overview

The main reason to choose Alua Tenerife over the southern resorts (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos) is Puerto de la Cruz itself. The north is genuinely different: greener, cooler in summer, with a lived-in town center 10–15 minutes on foot, a botanical garden, and the Loro Parque zoo nearby. Playa Jardín — the beach 150–300 meters from the hotel — is black volcanic sand, landscaped by César Manrique, and has a legitimate claim to being one of Tenerife's most attractive beaches. It's not the calm lagoon water of the south, however: waves can be strong, and swimming conditions can make the pool a more sensible option on windier days.

This property suits families who want a cultural holiday alongside beach time, and adults who prefer the authentic character of a working Canarian town over the purpose-built resort strips. The My Favorite Club tier adds meaningful upgrades — private check-in, a dedicated lounge, and ocean-view rooms — for guests who want a more personalized experience within the same all-inclusive format.

The honest limitation: the resort's building is described in many reviews as a dated, dark concrete structure. The 2021 renovation refreshed rooms and facilities but did not change the fundamental architecture. Noise is also a recurring issue — rooms near the entertainment area or pool receive sound from shows and activity well into the evening. Elevators have reportedly been slow or intermittently out of service. The buffet food quality for lunch and dinner is frequently described as repetitive and below the standard the setting promises.

Practically: 438 rooms across 10 categories, from 344 sq ft standard doubles to 646 sq ft two-bedroom suites. Two outdoor pools (adult and children's) plus a heated indoor pool at extra charge (closed Saturday afternoons and Sundays). The Vértigo Rooftop Bar operates evenings at extra charge. Gym and wellness area for guests 16 and over. Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is 22km away, 21 minutes by car. Tenerife South (TFS) is 84km, approximately 75 minutes.

Underground parking is available at roughly €12 per day. Street parking in Puerto de la Cruz is limited.

Pros

  • +Playa Jardín is 150–300 meters from the hotel — visually exceptional black volcanic sand landscaped by César Manrique.
  • +Puerto de la Cruz town center is 10–15 minutes on foot — restaurants, bars, and Loro Parque accessible without a taxi.
  • +Rooms start at 344 sq ft — larger than the 215–269 sq ft standard at many comparable all-inclusives.
  • +Pitch and putt golf is an unusual included activity rarely found at this price tier.
  • +Tenerife North Airport is 21 minutes by car — short transfer.

Cons

  • −The building's concrete architecture reads as dark and utilitarian in multiple reviews — the 2021 renovation improved rooms but not the structure.
  • −Gym access, indoor pool, and wellness facilities all cost extra — at many sister Alua properties, the gym is complimentary.
  • −Lunch and dinner buffet quality is frequently described as repetitive and below standard.
  • −Elevator reliability is a recurring complaint — not suitable for guests who can't use stairs.
  • −Pool sun loungers are claimed early with towels; the formal rule against this is inconsistently enforced.

Tips

  • Request a sea-view room at booking — the Atlantic panorama from upper-floor rooms significantly improves the stay.
  • Reserve the Mare Nubium à la carte dinner on the first morning — it fills fast and you only get one complimentary visit.
  • Arrive at the pool by 08:00 to secure a sun lounger without resorting to towel-reservation.
  • Budget for underground parking at approximately €12 per day — street parking in Puerto de la Cruz is genuinely limited.
  • Bring a hairdryer; the hotel-provided versions are repeatedly described as inadequate.
