Outstanding Staff & Service
Across every review platform, staff friendliness and attentiveness are the most praised aspects. Servers learn preferences, pool staff deliver drinks proactively, and the concierge team handles requests efficiently.
Beautiful Tropical Grounds
The mature gardens with roaming peacocks, iguanas, koi ponds, and flowering bougainvillea create a genuinely tropical atmosphere that guests consistently describe as gorgeous and well-maintained.
Family-Friendly Pool Complex
The three interconnected pools with lazy river and swim-up bar are praised as the resort's centerpiece. Multiple pool zones allow families and couples to find their preferred vibe.
Spacious Suite Accommodations
Guests appreciate the condo-style layout with separate bedrooms, living areas, and full kitchens — especially families who value the space and kitchen convenience for kids.
Excellent Kids' Programming
Parents consistently praise the Kids' Club activities and Teen Program for keeping children happily engaged, allowing adults genuine relaxation time.
Timeshare Sales Pressure
The most common complaint across all platforms. Guests report persistent invitations to timeshare presentations before arrival and during the stay, which some find aggressive despite declining.
Inconsistent Room Quality
With an ongoing renovation, room quality varies significantly. Unrenovated rooms show wear and dated decor, while renovated suites are modern and impressive. Request a renovated unit.
Murky Beach Water
The Pacific waters off Marina Vallarta can be brown or murky due to the nearby Ameca River. Not ideal for swimming or snorkeling — guests prefer the pools.
Limited Dining Variety
Three restaurants serve the entire property. While food quality is good, guests on longer stays note repetitive menus, especially at breakfast. The buffet can be inconsistent.
Airport Noise
Proximity to PVR airport (5 minutes) means occasional jet flyover noise, particularly in ocean-facing rooms. Request a garden-side suite if noise-sensitive.

Velas Vallarta occupies a prime stretch of Banderas Bay beachfront in Marina Vallarta — which means Guadalajara families, international travelers, and repeat guests from North America who know the Puerto Vallarta area well. The five-minute drive from PVR airport is one of the shortest hotel-to-airport transfers in Mexican resort destinations.
The property opened in 1990 and is deep into a rolling renovation that's updating suites with new decor, smart TVs, and kitchen upgrades. The renovation is not complete — rooms vary in condition, and the difference between a freshly renovated suite and an unrenovated unit is meaningful. Requesting a renovated room at booking is the practical first step. What the renovation hasn't changed are the mature tropical gardens: 35 years of growth produce the kind of dense foliage, koi ponds, and roaming peacocks that newer properties can't replicate regardless of budget.
The all-inclusive program covers dining at three restaurants, drinks, and non-motorized water sports. Suites start at 386 square feet and scale to a 5,478-square-foot Presidential Suite — but the more significant feature is that every suite has a full kitchen, with the refrigerator stocked daily with snacks, cereal, and milk. For families with young children, this changes the daily logistics considerably.
Beach conditions are an honest trade-off: the Ameca River estuary nearby means the ocean water in front of Velas Vallarta is sometimes murky rather than the clear turquoise water that resort marketing typically shows. The three interconnected pools with lazy river are the stronger aquatic draw for families. Airport proximity also means occasional jet noise in rooms facing the ocean — the garden-facing suites avoid this.
