Playa Conchal is one of the most distinctive beaches in Central America: its sand is composed almost entirely of tiny crushed seashells, giving it a coarser texture and brilliant white color that reads differently from any standard sand beach. The Westin Reserva Conchal sits directly on it, and that beach access is the property's clearest point of differentiation. The ocean here is generally calm and swimmable — a meaningful contrast to many Pacific Costa Rica beaches dominated by rough surf.
The property runs at two distinct speeds simultaneously: a full family resort and a legitimate adults-only retreat. Westin Club guests (18+) access a private pool with Bali Beds, an exclusive lounge (4–7 PM daily), private breakfast and lunch at Faisanella, and personalized concierge service. Family Junior Suite guests get a Family Concierge, kid-sized furniture, video games on request, and access to the Family Club Lounge. These are genuinely different experiences within the same all-inclusive property, not just marketing tiers.
The biggest recurring complaint at this resort is restaurant reservation access. With nine restaurants on a 2,400-acre property hosting 406 rooms at high occupancy, securing preferred dining times at a la carte venues — particularly Bamboo, Manglar, and La Sabana — requires booking immediately on arrival day. Guests who wait until day two consistently report unavailability. The resort app handles bookings, but peak season means even early arrivals face tradeoffs.
The 2,400-acre scale creates a logistical reality: you will use the shuttle system repeatedly. The golf course, beach, main pool, and restaurant clusters are all separated by distances that make walking impractical in Guanacaste heat. The shuttles run regularly but wait times compound when you're making multiple stops. Guests who don't like planning around transportation tend to find this frustrating; guests who treat it as part of the resort rhythm adapt quickly.
Practically: LIR airport is 45 minutes away; Tamarindo's smaller TNO airport is 15 minutes. Golf at the Robert Trent Jones II course carries green fees. Non-motorized watersports (kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling) are included at the beach. 24-hour room service and stocked minibars are included. Best season is December through April (dry season) when Guanacaste weather is most reliable.
