TripAdvisor
Sunscape Puerto Plata sits on Playa Dorada — one of Puerto Plata's most established beach stretches — on the site of the former Barcelo resort. The 2016 rebrand brought it into the Sunscape Unlimited-Fun® program, meaning no wristbands, no dining reservations at à la carte restaurants, and a family check-in with red-carpet stairs and 'passport' welcome for children. That check-in detail sounds small, but kids who arrive expecting a normal hotel check-in and get this instead remember it.
This is a Puerto Plata family resort, not a Punta Cana mega-property. The north coast has a different character — Playa Dorada is wide, golden, and generally calm, with the added novelty of access to an adjacent 18-hole Robert Trent Jones golf course (extra charge). Families with kids who golf, or parents who want to play while kids are in the clubs, find this combination more useful than on the east coast.
The most common complaint is buffet food quality — reviews consistently flag cold dishes, limited variety, and repetition over extended stays. The à la carte restaurants (Da Mario, Gaucho Grill, Gohan, Castaways) get significantly better marks. The resort also charges separately for in-room WiFi for non-Sun Club guests — lobby WiFi is free, but it's a minor inconvenience that some guests flag.
585 rooms at 355–1,216 sq ft depending on category. Fifteen minutes from Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP). Included activities cover windsurfing, catamaran sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and a more extensive water sports menu than most Dominican Republic all-inclusives. Golf is adjacent but additional cost. The Sunscape Spa (Finnish saunas added 2016) handles wellness at extra charge.
