Sunscape Akumal opened in 2019 after extensive renovation of the former Grand Oasis Tulum property — so the resort is physically newer than its address might suggest. The Akumal location is the defining geographic feature: this stretch of Riviera Maya coastline is known for its sea turtle habitats in the natural bay just north of the resort, accessible as a snorkeling day trip without going far. The reef system off Akumal is also one of the more intact sections of coast between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
The family programming is the primary value proposition. Rex Dino Land provides a water park structure with slides and splash areas; Kids Club runs supervised daily programming from morning to late afternoon; the Teen Club runs parallel programming for older guests. The animation team receives consistently strong reviews — more so than the food and rooms, which suggests the experience is oriented around activity rather than accommodation quality.
The Unlimited-Fun plan covers most food and drink, but there are add-on costs to know: Wi-Fi is free only for Sun Club room guests (standard rooms pay extra), and a mandatory Environmental Tax and Resort Fee is charged separately at check-in regardless of booking channel. The 96 km distance from Cancun airport means a 90-minute to 2-hour transfer — Tulum's airport (TQM) is closer at about 40 km if routing permits.
Sun Club rooms unlock a meaningful set of upgrades — beach access proximity, free Wi-Fi, upgraded minibar — and the gap between Sun Club and standard rooms is notable enough that the mid-range budget works better booking the Sun Club floor than saving on a base room with paid Wi-Fi and further beach positioning.
