When Secrets Lanzarote reopened in December 2019 after an €10-11 million renovation, it became the Secrets brand's first European property — which tells you something about what it's positioned to be: a premium adults-only all-inclusive that doesn't feel like a typical package-holiday resort. Puerto Calero is a marina town rather than a strip destination, and the resort's 335 rooms overlook a section of volcanic black sand beach rather than the more commonly photographed white-sand variety. The contrast is stark but works — the dark sand against turquoise Atlantic water is unusual, and the setting feels less tourist-saturated than Playa del Carmen or Cancun.
This works best for couples who want a European all-inclusive without the infantilizing feel of budget-tier Spanish resorts. The Unlimited-Luxury format means no wristbands, no reservation queues at dinner, and a premium spirits selection. It's also the right choice for guests who want to explore the island — Puerto Calero is 6 km from Puerto del Carmen's main beach and close enough to Playa Papagayo (20 minutes by car) to make day trips easy. If you want to sit at the pool all week without leaving the property, this works too, but Lanzarote's volcanic landscapes are genuinely worth seeing.
The main criticism worth naming: the main World Café buffet is where quality drops. Guests with longer stays (7+ nights) consistently note that the buffet cycle lacks variety and food can dry out at stations. The à la carte restaurants receive strong reviews but are dinner-only. For lunch, your options narrow to World Café, Barefoot Grill, and Coco Café — manageable for shorter stays, repetitive for longer ones. Also, some rooms have reported humidity issues and dated bathrooms despite the renovation — request a recently refreshed room when booking.
The property is 13-16 km from Lanzarote Airport (ACE), a taxi ride of under 20 minutes costing around €25 each way — straightforward. Four heated outdoor pools plus a Preferred Club pool. The Secrets Spa has 10 individual treatment rooms and an extensive hydrotherapy circuit with a 14-meter dynamic pool; treatments are at additional cost. The 10-minute promenade walk to Puerto Calero Marina opens up a handful of independent restaurants and bars if resort fatigue sets in.
