Overview

Sandos San Blas Nature Resort & Golf — now Barceló Tenerife — is one of the most architecturally distinctive all-inclusive resorts in the Canary Islands. Built in 2008 and renovated in 2022, the property was designed to echo the volcanic landscape and North African desert towns of southern Tenerife: earthen tones, tiered structures, and cascading water features throughout. The San Blas Environmental Reserve isn't just marketing language — the resort is physically embedded in it, with a multimedia interpretation center, guided nature tours, and a sailing lake that can't be found at the usual beach-and-pool resorts nearby.

The golf proximity is legitimate: Amarilla Golf and Golf del Sur (one of the most respected courses in the Canaries) are both within a few minutes' drive. The 3 km distance from Tenerife South Airport (TFS) means arrival transfers run under 10 minutes — meaningful for families and older travelers who find long transfers tiresome. Eight outdoor pools including two adults-only heated pools, an infinity pool, and an adult river-flow pool give water options beyond a typical resort count.

The direct beach situation requires honest context: the resort's immediate waterfront is a small man-made pebble area where swimming is not available from the resort itself. Playa San Blas and El Médano are both 200 meters away, and El Médano is one of the best beaches on the island for wind sports (kitesurfing, windsurfing). Guests expecting a beach resort with resort-to-sea access will be disappointed; guests who understand they're choosing an eco-pool resort near a windy beach make better decisions about fit.

Guest reviews consistently flag the buffet as repetitive on longer stays and note patchy Wi-Fi in rooms — common friction points for a resort this size. The plane noise from TFS is audible, particularly during peak hours, though the short transfer is the tradeoff. Free twice-daily shuttle to Playa de Las Americas expands options for guests who want a livelier town base.

Pros

  • +3 km from Tenerife South Airport means transfers under 10 minutes — the shortest resort-to-airport distance of any Tenerife all-inclusive, a practical advantage for families and guests with tight flight schedules.
  • +Eight pools including two heated adults-only options make this viable year-round — shoulder season (October–April) in Tenerife is often 20–24°C, and the heated pools make that work.
  • +The San Blas Environmental Reserve integration and sailing lake are genuine — this is a materially different experience from a concrete resort built on a sandy beach.

Cons

  • −Buffet repetition on stays beyond 4–5 nights is the most consistent guest complaint — the specialty restaurants (Arrozante, La Dolce Vita) carry an additional charge and are the only meaningful break from the rotation.
  • −Wi-Fi signal in rooms is frequently reported as weak or unreliable — guests who depend on connectivity for work should verify room placement or consider a SIM card.
  • −Airplane noise from TFS's approach path is audible, particularly during peak hours — the 3 km proximity that makes transfers easy also puts the resort under the flight path.

Tips

  • Book the Arrozante paella restaurant for your first or second evening — it's not included in the all-inclusive rate but it's the most distinctive dining option in Golf del Sur and worth the extra cost once per stay.
  • Take the guided San Blas Environmental Reserve tour within your first two days — it fundamentally reframes the landscape you're looking at for the rest of the stay.
  • For El Médano beach, bring a windbreaker and water shoes — the Trade Winds are consistent and the beach entry is rocky. The spectacle of kitesurfers is worth the afternoon regardless.
