Overview

Sandals Grande Antigua has two distinct resort villages under one roof: the Mediterranean Village and the Caribbean Grove. These aren't just naming distinctions — the architecture, atmosphere, and pool character genuinely differ between the two sections. Mediterranean guests get the 15,000 sq ft main pool (the largest in the East Caribbean), penthouse suites with bay views, and a more formal European resort aesthetic. Caribbean Village guests get one-story cottage-style rooms tucked into tropical gardens, a quieter setting, and beachfront walkout options that put them literally steps from Dickenson Bay.

The resort has been titled the 'World's Most Romantic Resort' by various travel awards and exclusively serves couples — this is not a property for solo travelers, families, or non-romantic travel companions. The couples-only policy creates a notably different atmosphere from mixed-demographic all-inclusives: quieter common areas, more intimate dining room dynamics, and a consistent focus on romance-adjacent experiences. The Piano Bar and Barefoot by the Sea (shoes off, toes in the sand dining) are specific to this positioning.

The most reliable complaint in guest reviews is restaurant reservation difficulty at peak times. The 11 restaurants are genuinely diverse and high-quality, but they fill up — particularly Kimonos (teppanyaki) and Eleanor's (fine Caribbean dining). Arriving without same-day reservations for these two is a real risk. The beach at Dickenson Bay is exceptional: consistently calm, genuinely white sand, and one of the most swimmable resort beaches in the Eastern Caribbean.

Practically: the resort is 15–20 minutes from V.C. Bird International Airport; Sandals includes complimentary airport transfers. All 373 rooms are for couples only. Butler Elite is the top service tier, available in suites from 480 sq ft upward. The Rondoval suites — distinctive circular rooms with conical roofs — are a unique room category not available at most other Sandals properties.

Pros

  • +Included PADI-certified scuba diving is genuinely rare at all-inclusive resorts — even certified divers who have dived elsewhere should take advantage
  • +The 15,000 sq ft Mediterranean pool is one of the most impressive pool facilities in the Eastern Caribbean
  • +Dickenson Bay's calm, clear water makes it one of the most reliably swimmable resort beaches in Antigua
  • +The Rondoval circular suite rooms are architecturally unusual and distinctive — worth booking if the design appeals to you
  • +Sandals' couples-only policy creates a meaningfully different atmosphere from mixed-demographic all-inclusives

Cons

  • −Restaurant reservations for Kimonos and Eleanor's are effectively required but not always formally available — arriving at opening is the practical solution
  • −Beach vendors at Dickenson Bay can be persistent — this is a known irritant and the resort manages it imperfectly
  • −Some rooms show age-related wear despite ongoing renovations since 2020
  • −Late check-out fees apply — a minor but annoying reality when flights depart in the evening

Tips

  • Make dinner reservations for Eleanor's and Kimonos immediately upon arrival — go to the restaurant desks before going to your room if these are priorities
  • Soy Sushi Bar is genuinely recommended by regular guests as a pre-dinner appetizer stop — factor this into dinner planning
  • The Drunken Duck closes at 2 AM — the only venue open this late. If you miss dinner at a specialty restaurant, this is your fallback
  • For scuba diving: go to the dive desk on arrival day and schedule your dives for the week. Certified divers should plan multiple dives; beginners can do pool and ocean sessions at no cost
  • The Sunset Bluff Honeymoon Luxury Club Level Room gives the best elevated views of Dickenson Bay for the price — worth requesting specifically over generic 'ocean view' rooms
