Sanctuary Cap Cana earns its Luxury Collection designation in a meaningful way: this is the first all-inclusive property ever placed in Marriott's highest-end brand portfolio, and the physical product justifies it. The resort's design — built to resemble a Spanish colonial castle town with towers, cobblestoned courtyards, and thick-walled architecture — is immediately distinctive and nothing like a standard Caribbean all-inclusive. The resort originally opened in 2007, received a $45 million renovation in 2019, and joined Marriott's Luxury Collection in September 2022. After Hurricane Fiona damage, it reopened in early 2023 following further repairs.
Playa Juanillo, where the resort sits, is consistently ranked among the five most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic — wider and less developed than Bavaro Beach, with calmer water and fewer resorts on the same stretch. The beach access is the resort's second most valuable feature after the architecture.
This is an adults-only (18+) property, which shapes the entire experience. There are no water slides, no kids' clubs, no splash parks. Instead: five pool types including a saltwater pool and castle pool, a serious spa program, multiple specialty restaurants, and access to Punta Espada Golf Club (a Jack Nicklaus signature course) and Scape Park. The Cap Cana marina is walkable and has restaurants and activities beyond the resort.
At 324 rooms, Sanctuary is mid-sized for Cap Cana but the castle layout means the property feels intimate. Service quality is a consistent positive in guest reviews — the Luxury Collection standard requires trained butler-level attentiveness. The main honest drawback: the specialty dining is strong but the buffet receives mixed reviews for quality relative to the premium price point. Given the a la carte restaurants are all included and walk-in, most guests bypass the buffet except for breakfast.
