Overview

Margaritaville St. Somewhere Punta Coco opened March 1, 2022 as a collaboration between Margaritaville and Karisma Hotels on Holbox Island, a car-free island within the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve off the northern Yucatan Peninsula. With 39 suites, this is the smallest Margaritaville Island Reserve property in Mexico by a significant margin — and the most remote. Reaching Holbox from Cancun International Airport requires approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours: a 155–172 km drive to the ferry terminal at Chiquilá followed by a 20-minute ferry crossing. This is not a property for guests who want a quick airport-to-beach transition.

What the remote location delivers: 3,000+ feet of beach on Punta Coco that is notably free of sargassum seaweed, because the island sits outside the Gulf Stream current. The water is calm, warm, and turquoise. Holbox itself is one of the few remaining undeveloped island destinations in Mexico — no cars, limited crowds outside of whale shark season (June–September), and a pace of life that's genuinely unhurried rather than performatively rustic. The boho-chic design with whitewashed furniture, parota wood tables, Klipsch Bluetooth speakers, and hand-carved marble sinks gives each suite a specific aesthetic rather than the generic tropical luxury finish.

Dining requires attention: the property is not automatically all-inclusive. The 'Chef Select Package' (introduced March 2023) adds full meal coverage — confirm whether your booking includes it. Without the package, food and drinks are charged separately. The two restaurants — The Sandbar & Pan American Grill and The Harbour House — are strong enough that guests who know about Holbox's food scene appreciate the quality. Room service runs 24 hours.

For families: all ages welcome, no dedicated kids' club. For whale shark encounters: June–September, guided tours are extra cost but represent one of the world's best opportunities to swim with whale sharks in their natural habitat. For car-free island quietude: this is the correct property in Mexico.

Pros

  • +Punta Coco beach is naturally sargassum-free due to Gulf Stream positioning — genuinely clean white sand and calm turquoise water without the seaweed management that plagues most Mexican resort beaches
  • +The car-free island environment and 39-room scale create an authentic slowdown that cannot be replicated at larger mainland resorts
  • +Whale shark season (June–September) makes this one of the world's most accessible locations for swimming with whale sharks in their natural migration route

Cons

  • −The 3.5–4.5 hour journey from Cancun (drive plus ferry) creates real logistical complexity for short stays or guests with late-night arrivals
  • −The resort is not automatically all-inclusive — confirm the Chef Select Package status at booking or budget separately for restaurant meals and drinks
  • −No dedicated kids' club means families with children requiring structured supervision should plan activities independently — the island environment is the programming

Tips

  • Book a private transfer from Cancun to Chiquilá rather than public buses — the drive is long and the luggage logistics for the ferry are easier with a dedicated vehicle
  • Arrive at Yalahau cenote before 9 AM to experience the spring water with minimal crowds — it fills with day-trippers by mid-morning
  • Bring cash in small denominations for tips and island exploration — Holbox town has limited ATM access and most small vendors are cash-only
