The resort's remote and hilly location necessitates a rental car for guests wishing to explore the island, as public transport options are limited and nearby attractions are not easily walkable.

  • Buffet Congestion

Some guests experience crowded buffet restaurants, leading to occasional waiting times or slow service in clearing tables, particularly during peak hours.

  • Dated Room Elements

While generally spacious, some rooms are noted for having dated furnishings or amenities, and occasional issues with soundproofing or uncomfortable mattresses.

  • Limited Lift Access

The resort's expansive, hilly layout combined with a scarcity of lifts or frequent lift breakdowns can make navigation challenging, especially for guests with mobility issues or strollers.

Overview

La Palma Princess occupies a dramatic clifftop position in Fuencaliente, on the southern tip of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The property is designed to evoke a traditional Canarian village — low-rise buildings arranged around squares with palm gardens — and the Atlantic views from the higher sections of the resort are genuinely striking. The 484 rooms are spread across this large, hilly campus, which creates a layout challenge: getting from one part of the resort to another requires elevation changes, and the lifts are inconsistently maintained.

The resort attracts a broad demographic — families during school holiday periods, couples and older guests the rest of the year. The 'Esencia de La Palma' adults-only zone (16+) provides a separate pool, bar (Coral Bar), and restaurant (Restaurant Origen) for guests who want separation from family areas. This is a genuine physical separation rather than a designated floor of a shared building.

The most important thing to understand before booking: you cannot walk to a beach from this property. La Palma's black sand volcanic beaches are the island's distinctive natural feature, and several are striking — but the nearest (La Zamora, 1.5 km) is a small rocky cove, and the more appealing beaches are 6 to 35 km away. Renting a car is not optional if beach time matters to you; it's a prerequisite.

On the positive side, the pool complex is among the largest on La Palma, the fitness facility with 50+ TECHNOGYM machines is legitimate for a resort gym, and the food quality across the dining program draws consistently positive reviews. The Aqua Princess Spa thermal circuit is 700m² but carries an additional charge beyond the all-inclusive rate — budget for it if spa access is important.

Pros

  • +The 500m² gym with 50+ TECHNOGYM machines is a legitimate resort fitness facility — not a hotel gym with 8 treadmills.
  • +The Esencia de La Palma adults-only section provides physical separation from the main property with exclusive pools, bar, and restaurant.
  • +El Mirador restaurant for breakfast offers sea views and table service — significantly better than the main buffet hall experience.
  • +La Palma's volcanic landscape, dark skies, and proximity to the Roque de los Muchachos observatory make off-property excursions genuinely distinctive — don't stay on property every day.

Cons

  • −No walkable beach — the nearest black sand coves are 1.5 km minimum, and the better beaches are 6 to 35 km away. A rental car is non-optional.
  • −Lifts across the hilly campus are unreliable — mobility-limited guests or those with young children in strollers should ask about room placement near access routes.
  • −The Aqua Princess Spa thermal circuit carries an additional charge beyond the all-inclusive rate.
  • −Quality of included alcoholic drinks beyond beer and cava has drawn repeated criticism — premium spirits may disappoint.

Tips

  • Rent a car before arrival — book directly from the airport or in advance online. Island exploration is not practical without one, and the beaches that make La Palma distinctive are all a drive away.
  • Consider the Esencia de La Palma upgrade if you're traveling as a couple or solo adult — the private pool zone is noticeably less crowded, particularly during school holiday periods.
  • Evening dress code applies: no swimwear, flip-flops, or sleeveless shirts in bars and restaurants after 6 PM. Pack accordingly.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle — bottled water may incur charges, and tap water on La Palma is generally fine for brushing teeth but not always recommended for drinking.
  • Bring your own USB charging adapters — rooms may lack modern charging ports.
