Hotel Riu Palace Swahili opened in February 2026 as Riu Hotels & Resorts' first property in Tanzania. The Nungwi location is significant — Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Zanzibar, where the tidal flats that make mid-island beaches shallow and seaweed-prone are less of an issue. The beach here has more consistent swimming conditions than the east-coast beaches that suffer from tidal exposure. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is approximately 61km away, around 1 hour 15 minutes by transfer — the longest airport run of any property in this batch.
As a brand-new 2026 opening, the property has no pre-renovation fatigue and no dated public areas. That said, as an entirely new operation, it also lacks the settled service consistency that develops over years — early guests should expect occasional operational roughness typical of any new resort finding its footing.
The adults-only positioning (18+) is absolute — no exceptions. The Elite Club by RIU tier is available, providing select rooms with private swimming pools and dedicated lounge access. Five specialty restaurants are on-site: Krystal (fusion), Duomo (Italian), Helios (Mediterranean), Steakhouse, and the Elite Club Restaurant exclusive to Elite Club guests. The Helios Mediterranean concept is worth noting — it's the most destination-adjacent option in the lineup, given Zanzibar's Arab and Indian Ocean culinary influences, though the execution is Italian-Mediterranean rather than Zanzibari.
For nightlife, the RIU Party concept at neighboring Riu Jambo is complimentary — accessible via inter-property arrangement. Non-motorized water sports (kayaking, stand-up paddle) are also at Riu Jambo rather than this property, which requires the short walk or transfer between properties.
